The SPbU alumni Reunion will take place in Berlin

For the first time ever the traditional gathering of the SPbU graduates will take place outside of Russia. On October 11-12, 2019 the Free University of Berlin will host the alumni of all majors and all years of graduation of Russia’s first university. Lectures by writer Andrei Astvatsatourov and paleontologist Pavel Skuchas, presentation of the SPbU Alumni Association programs and various discussions are part of the rich and insightful agenda.

The program of the international Reunion reflects the very essence of the Alumni Association – science, language and time breaking the boundaries. Famous writer and philologist, Associate Professor of St. Petersburg University Andrei Astvatsatourov will give a lecture “Modern prose: the boundaries of language”. “I will dwell upon the recent works of Russian writers, their choice of language strategies and how they try to recreate the reality describing the past and the present,” the writer explains. Pavel Skuchas, paleontologist and a specialist in Mesozoic Era, Associate Professor of St. Petersburg University will be the next speaker. The scientist who described two new species of dinosaurs found in Russia will present the topic “Connecting and dividing the continents: evolutionary history of dinosaur fauna”. “The Reunion is mostly for the graduates living outside Russia, so I decided to talk about the effect that the structure of continents had on the evolution of dinosaurs,” Skuchas says.

On the second day, during the river cruise, graduates will participate in the Alumni Talks, a format popular for such events. They will have a chance to talk about themselves and their professional path, to establish business, scientific and creative ties with each other.
“Once a year, we hold the grand Reunion in St. Petersburg: this May, we welcomed almost two thousand guests at the large Festival of Science and Culture on the historical campus of St. Petersburg State University. We would like to make the graduates who live abroad a part of our dynamic and engaged community. The first Reunion outside of Russia is not only an alumni meeting with exciting program and networking opportunities, it will strengthen ties between universities and countries,” says Alexander Arkhipov, the Executive Director of the SPbU Alumni Association.

Free University of Berlin – the venue for the main program – was chosen for a reason. This university is one of the youngest and most dynamic in Germany, it has the largest number of students, and is a long-standing partner of the St. Petersburg’s State University.
