Ludmila Snegireva

For the past five years, Ludmila Snegireva, who moved here from Moscow 12 years ago, has worked with the “Music for Galway” philharmonic board of directors.

When trying to find a way to satisfy her “hunger for culture”, Ludmila met people who, in 1981, founded the now well-established organization “Music for Galway”. With superb musical taste and believing in the unifying power of art, Ludmila was inspired to bring classical music to the lives of the people of the West Ireland, and she became actively involved in organising concerts. Every year the philharmonic organises hundreds of performances with artists from all over the world. For example, in 2010 the team managed to invite musicians from more than 12 countries on four continents. Performances range from recitals to symphony concerts, from classical to contemporary music and take place every two weeks.

In addition to concerts, “Music for Galway” holds interviews with composers, writers and artists, hosts themed excursions and musical ‘surprise evenings’, so that there really is something for everyone.

The philharmonic annually arranges themed festivals. Often, they are devoted to Russian composers such as Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky. Their works are performed by Irish and British musicians. Russian performers also take part in the festival.

In over 30 years of its existence, “Music for Galway” has earned respect and recognition as a group of lovers of classical music as well as professionals.

Educated as a teacher and a scholar, Ludmilla continues to teach in Ireland. She teaches Russian in the Russian school in Galway and evening courses on Russian literature in the English language at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Ludmila’s motto is “Make your road by walking” and she continues to engage in self-development. She decided to finish an educational program in Modern Irish Poetry and has enrolled in evening courses in NUIG.
