Met Eireann made the worrying prediction as the Atlantic storm u-turns away from the US

Met Eireann have warned that “very disturbed weather” is on the way as Hurricane Helene u-turns away from America.
The dangerous Atlantic storm is now on a collision course for Ireland, swirling north east towards us.
It is expected to gradually weaken over the coming days with the National Hurricane Center saying it may be downgraded to a tropical storm today, Thursday.
A NHC spokesperson said: “A turn toward the north and northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected during the next few days.
“Maximum sustained winds remain near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast over the next couple of days, and Helene is expected to become a tropical storm on Thursday.”
Ahead of its arrival, Met Eireann issued an update saying that while “there is a large degree of uncertainty in the details at present” the weather could get “potentially very disturbed early next week”.
A forecaster wrote on their website: “The upcoming weather will be unsettled generally but potentially very disturbed early next week.
“There is a risk of some extremely windy conditions with heavy rainfall on Monday night or Tuesday but there is a large degree of uncertainty in details at present.”
Irish weather expert Alan O’Reilly also wrote on the Carlow Weather Facebook page: “Latest charts on Helene show its path still heading for Ireland with strong gusts Monday night as she moves through Ireland. Still a long way off and the track will chop and change but something to keep a close eye on.
“At present the rainfall from Helene is mainly modelled to stay out in the Atlantic but a change in path would move that too.”
Hurricane Helene is currently following the trail of Florence which is about to make landfall on the east coast of America.
Officials in North and South Carolina urged people to evacuate the coast ahead of the storm’s expected pounding winds and rain-driven floods.
Florence weakened slightly to a Category 3 storm on a five-step scale, but had maximum sustained winds of 201km/h as of 2pm EDT (6pm GMT), down from 209km/h earlier in the day.
For the 2018 – 2019 season, the first storm will be male and named Ali, while the second storm will be female and named Bronagh.
From then on it will follow the alternating male/female pattern, established by the US NHC in the 1970s.
